Every year, WIZO is marking the 8th of March as a very special day – the day we celebrate our womanhood, our sisterhood of Jewish women from around the world, and above all, we celebrate the work we do every day to support women.
Even before the State of Israel was established, WIZO played a key role in empowering, supporting and advancing the status of women. Since 1920, our work for women has never ceased. We run women’s shelters, organize workshops for girls, and at each one of our Day Care Centers, we encourage young girls to follow their dreams.
Years ago, Eleanor Roosevelt said: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
This statement remains an echoing message WIZO relays every day – we must stand for our rights and lead women forward and continue our vital work to achieve equal rights for women.
The UN theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality” and WIZO has launched an equality campaign called “Wear It, Share It”, to encourage women to proudly wear WIZO-designed shirts to strive for equality and celebrate themselves for who they are.
The Jewish politician Madeleine Albright, who was the first woman to become a United States Secretary of State, once said:
“I love being a woman and I was not one of these women who rose through professional life by wearing men’s clothes or looking masculine. I loved wearing bright colors and being who I am.”
Let us stand tall, and be proud of who we are – strong, independent and determined women. Today, let us be proud to be a part of our movement –Israel’s leading women’s organization. Let us be proud of all we have achieved, and work hand-in-hand to continue helping women fulfill their full potential.
