Dr Gisella Perl was the brave Auschwitz inmate who, as a gynaecologist, helped hundreds of fellow female prisoners, despite lacking even the barest necessities there to perform her medical work.
Dr Perl survived the war and settled in New York. She published her heart-rending memoir, ‘I Was A Doctor in Auschwitz’ in 1948 and became an infertility specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital.
”I treated patients with my voice, telling them beautiful stories, telling them that one day we would have birthdays again, that one day we would sing again.”
