45. Gloria Newhouse

100 Women of Influence

In the late 1970’s Gloria was invited to a ‘get together’ to learn about an organisation called WIZO which worked for the betterment of Israeli society. Many likeminded women also with young children attended and listened to an interesting guest speaker, a sex therapist. WOW, how risqué for those times! However it was the information she heard after that, explaining the role of WIZO in the development and support of Israel which stayed with her, as well as the lifelong friendships which were forged and remain to this day as members of WIZO Yaffa.

This group of committed young women grew and prospered through great leadership, exciting events, shows, guest speakers and a reputation for excellent catering. Gloria herself set up her own catering and bakery business that became an iconic landmark in the eastern suburbs for 25 years. Through all this time she remained deeply connected to the group and attended all meetings and events. She even took on the office of President of the group and due to her diligence and commitment was asked to accept the position of President of WIZO NSW in 2010.

Gloria’s presidency was highlighted by her very calm, warm and engaging demeanour. She believed in making a consistent effort to stay in contact with members, donors and volunteers. As much as she understood the need to fundraise she was a strong advocate of fundraising in the community through lifting the profile of WIZO’s work. Gloria is still active on the Executive of WIZO NSW and her commitment remains undiminished.
