Ruby was WIZO’s first State President and at the same time WIZO’s Federal President in 1937 when WIZO was formed in Sydney. She was a Jewish community leader, feminist and pianist. Born in Walgett NSW the fourth of six children of German-born Louis Rich, storekeeper and his Melbourne born wife Ada, nee’ Bebarfald. Shortly after Ruby’s birth the family moved to Sydney, where her father became a successful businessman and was prominent in the Jewish community.
This inspired Ruby to become involved in many humanitarian, community welfare and Israel directed organizations. She travelled and lived in London for some years before marrying and settling in Sydney.
Ruby was awarded an MBE and the ANZAC Peace Medal in 1967 and the U.N. Peace Price in 1971. Ruby passed away just shy of her 100th birthday.
