At the WIZO Finale on Tuesday evening 6th December we had the opportunity to conference call with Yossi Saragosi, Director of WIZO Ahuzat Yeladim.
Yossi, ever an optimist who focusses on the positive and gets on with the job, went to great lengths to reassure the WIZO members in the room that everything is OK. Yet the exhaustion in his voice after the extremely challenging week that the staff and children of WIZO Ahuzat Yeladim have endured, was clear.
The children have now returned to WIZO Ahuzat Yeladim and workers have commenced immediate clean up, made possible by some of the funds raised through the Emergency Bush Fire Appeal.
Property damage includes
• The School of Life
• The Bakery
• The Computer Room
• The Pet Therapy Centre
• The Green House
• Electrical system (which has now been fixed and is in operation)
• The grounds and gardens
Many of the youth including the younger ones from Ahuza Ha’ktana have taken part in the “Hosen” program. “Hosen” literally means resilience. This program began a few years ago during a time Israel was under heavy rocket fire and is intended to give youth tools for coping in emergency and stressful situations.
Through participation in this program, the children at Ahuzat were given the opportunity to speak of their fears during the fire.
They spoke about how they felt relieved and a little less frightened watching the staff work so hard to organize their move to alternative locations. They spoke about issues that frightened them and practiced relaxing breathing skills and other stress management techniques. They were also given the opportunity to draw pictures in order to express their feelings, and later the pictures were hung on two walls.
One wall had pictures where they expressed their feelings during the emergency, and the other wall displayed pictures about how they felt afterwards, once the crises was all over.
The staff at WIZO Ahuzat Yeladim are doing all they can to support the children through this ordeal and rebuilding is due to commence soon.
Many thanks to our donors who are continually supporting the Emergency Bush Fire Appeal for WIZO Ahuzat Yeladim.
