The WIZO Australia 24th Triennial Conference on 21st and 22nd of May marked the end of Gilla Liberman’s six year term as President of WIZO Australia. Tribute was paid to Gilla at a dinner held in her honour on the Saturday night. The atmosphere of heartfelt warmth and genuine camaraderie in the room at the dinner paid testament to the support and respect Gilla has garnished during her time as WIZO Australia President.
WIZO Australia now moves from Sydney down to Melbourne for a six year term under the capable leadership of the newly elected WIZO Australia President, Paulette Cherny.
Joining us for the conference and tribute dinner was World WIZO President, Esther Mor, whose impressive list of accomplishments includes fluency in eight languages. Esther offered real, black and white insight into the lives of the women, children and families who are supported by the 800 WIZO projects across Israel.
Esther Mor also brought to our attention the urgent need to renovate the kitchen at WIZO Ahuzat Yeladim. The kitchen is in such poor condition that it no longer meets health and safety standards. The situation is urgent as the kitchen may be closed unless it is renovated.
In Gilla’s address at her tribute dinner, she expressed her mixed feelings about completing her six year term as WIZO Australia President, and the overwhelming support of members and friends working together to better the lives of women, children and families in Israel.
Under Gilla’s leadership so much has been achieved including renovation of the Jonas dormitory and 2 out of 3 school buildings in the School of Life at WIZO Ahuzat Yeladim in Haifa, enlarging the Pet Therapy and gardening programs, buying new beds for all of the children at WIZO Ahuzat Yeladim and replacing the dentist’s chair and equipment. Gilla has also led the refurbishment and modernisation of our three Day Care centres and the renovation and extension of the Korunski Youth Club library.
As acknowledged by Gloria Newhouse, Immediate Past President of WIZO NSW ‘ Gilla has led WIZO to some tremendous highs and has accomplished all the goals she set out to achieve. The lives changed by WIZO during Gilla’s leadership are too numerous to count.’
All WIZO Australia chaverot thank Gilla for everything from the bottom of our hearts. Gilla has truly given life to Helen Reddy’s anthem ‘I am woman’ during her six years as WIZO Australia President:
If I have to I can do anything,
I am strong
I am invincible
I am woman
