Regardless of personal political views, Bibi’s recent visit was encouraging and heart-warming for Zionists throughout our community. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull asserted Australia’s solidarity with Israel, which was further reinforced by the presence of former Australian Prime Ministers, The Honourable John Howard OM AC and The Honourable Tony Abbott MP at The Central Synagogue.
Like Moshe ‘Bogie’ Ya’alon the former Israeli Minister of Defence, who was the guest speaker at the WIZO Major Function last year, Bibi started his address by acknowledging the Sydney Jewish community. Both ‘Bogie’ and Mr Netanyahu were incredibly moved by the unique nature of our community and our consistent long-term support of Israel.
Prime Minister Netanyahu’s emotive introduction ‘I bring you greetings from Jerusalem, our eternal capital, never to be divided again’, was greeted with thundering applause. He then went on to talk about the ingenuity of the Jewish people, highlighting that very few people in antiquity survived. In contrast, the Jewish people have not only survived but we have thrived and Israel has become a beacon of freedom and progress.
What is the secret of our success? According to Bibi ‘It is our continual quest for the future combined with a deep regards for the past. A unique combination of tradition and innovation.’
We have much to be proud of. Am Yisrael Chai!
