#58 Nelly Weiss OAM z’l.
This refined and intelligent woman with a happy disposition was also a proud Jew who had a passion for her people both in Israel and the diaspora.
She took on the leadership of WIZO NSW for 5 years from 1977 – 1981, after which she immediately became president of WIZO Australia, representing the organisation with a great sense of diplomacy, an intelligent approach and respect for our community.
She believed strongly in the continuity of WIZO through the generations and she founded the Cecile and Max Merel Leadership training award named in honour of her dear parents. This sponsorship enabled chosen young women to attend the annual Aviv Seminar in Israel to benefit from the inspiring people and projects who make WIZO’s work happen.
No-one will forget the historic demonstration Nelly organised with other WIZO members to travel by bus along with other prominent people around Australia to Canberra when The Russian President Mikael Gorbachev landed visited. Waving placards saying ”let my People Go’” she was snapped by the Paparazzi and made front page news that day.
Strong, determined and tireless Nelly made a difference through WIZO and left her mark. Nelly is sorely missed by all who knew, loved and respected her.
